Guide 5 ยท Two routes
Male escort agency or independent: how the two routes compare
A man who wants to become a male escort can join an agency or advertise for himself. This page comes from an agency, so read it with that in mind. It tries to be fair to both.
The two routes in one paragraph each
Independent. You create your own advertisements or website, choose your own photos and rate, answer every enquiry yourself, decide whom to meet and keep everything the client pays. You are your own marketing department, booking desk and security check.
With an agency. The agency presents your profile to its existing clients, handles enquiries and bookings, and takes a fee from the client for doing so. You turn up for the bookings you have accepted. You give up part of what the client pays and some control over presentation, in return for clients you would not have found and a good deal less administration.
Neither route makes you an employee. In both cases you are self-employed, responsible for your own tax and free to stop.
Side by side
| Independent | With an agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Finding clients | Your own advertising and reputation | The agency’s client base and website |
| Enquiries | You answer all of them, serious or not | The agency filters and passes on real requests |
| Knowing who the client is | Only what she chooses to tell you | The agency holds the client’s details |
| No-shows | Common, and your loss | Rare where the client pays a fee in advance |
| Rate | Entirely your decision | Agreed with the agency |
| What you keep | Everything the client pays | Your part of the total |
| Upfront costs | Advertising, photos, possibly a website | None at TMC |
| Your privacy | Your own phone number and messages are exposed | Clients deal with the agency, not with you directly |
| Control over profile | Complete | Shared, by agreement |
Where clients come from
This is the real dividing line. By all accounts women book male escorts far less often than men book female escorts, and they are more cautious about it. A woman deciding whether to meet a stranger for paid intimacy wants reassurance that he is who he says he is, that he is healthy and that her own details are safe.
An established agency provides that reassurance through its name. An independent has to build it himself, one client at a time, and that takes a long while. Men who try the independent route commonly report plenty of messages and few real bookings. A good many enquiries turn out to come from time-wasters, or from men.
An agency that has been operating since 2009 has something a new independent cannot buy: regular clients, in several countries, who already trust it and return.
Time and administration
Independents often underestimate the hours that never get paid. Writing and refreshing advertisements, answering messages at all times of day, negotiating, confirming, chasing deposits and dealing with cancellations can take more time than the bookings themselves.
With an agency that work is done for you. At TMC the client pays the agency’s fee in advance at every booking, which is why confirmed bookings nearly always go ahead. You hear about a request when it is real.
The other side of that is dependence. If the agency sends you nothing, you have nothing, and you cannot fix it by advertising harder.
Money
On paper the independent keeps more per booking, because there is no agency fee inside the client’s price. Whether he earns more overall depends on how many genuine bookings he can generate alone, and on what his advertising costs.
An agency’s rates are often higher than a new independent can charge, because clients are paying for the vetting and the certainty as well as for the man. The escort’s share at TMC is not published. You are told during the application process, and you can compare it then with what you think you could manage on your own.
Safety and screening
An independent escort meets people about whom he knows only what they have told him. Most are exactly who they claim to be. Some are not, and men are not immune to being robbed or secretly filmed.
An agency knows who the client is, because she has booked and paid through it. At TMC those details stay with the agency. The escort’s own details are never passed to clients or to third parties, which also means a client cannot turn up at your door or find your real name from a phone number.
Health is handled differently too. An independent sets his own rules. TMC requires safe sex at every booking and a full STI and HIV test every three months for every escort.
Privacy
An independent has to be findable, and being findable is the opposite of being discreet. His photos, his number and his messages are out in the open for as long as he advertises.
With an agency, the public sees an alias and whichever photos you have approved, with your face obscured if you prefer. Contact runs through the agency. For men with a career or a family to consider, this is often the deciding point. There is more under discretion and privacy for escorts.
Who each route suits
The independent route suits a man who enjoys running a small business, has time for the marketing, does not mind being publicly visible and is patient enough to build a client base from nothing.
The agency route suits a man who wants to do the bookings and leave the rest to someone else, who values privacy, and who accepts that the agency decides whether to take him on at all. That last point matters: an agency such as TMC turns most applicants away.
The law treats both routes in much the same way, and the outline is on the page about law and tax for male escorts in the UK. If the agency route is the one you want to try, start with how the selection process works.
